Amid planetary crisis, there are communities worldwide committed to nourishing and co-creating relational forms of life that foreground reciprocity, care, and respect—drawing on longstanding Indigenous practices and experimenting with multispecies justice and more‑than‑human governance.
Time to Listen (26–27 June 2026) asks what sound can do within this turn. We invite participants to expand listening and music‑making to include more‑than‑human actors—attuning to animals, plants, rivers, ecosystems, and technologies as sonic partners—and to decentre anthropocentric listening by situating sound within ecologically interconnected worlds. At stake is creativity itself: when relation becomes the site of creative action, what new forms of shared agency, reciprocity, and co‑making emerge? And methodologically: how might the arts, listening/attending, practice, ritual, emotions, stories, humour, and ‘productive weirdness’ catalyse the disruptions needed for transformative openings?
The conference is part of the SPREEKLÄNGE project, a festival of contemporary music along the Spree River in Charlottenburg organised by the Academy of Arts (25–28 June 2026). The conference will take place in the Academy’s venue at Hanseatenweg. It is jointly organised by field notes / inm and the Academy of Arts and developed in collaboration with composer and researcher Liza Lim, who leads the music-based, multi-year research project Multispecies Creativity and Climate Communication (2025–2029) at the University of Sydney.

Inmitten der planetaren Krise entstehen weltweit Gemeinschaften, die sich der Pflege und gemeinsamen Gestaltung relationaler Lebensweisen widmen, in denen Gegenseitigkeit, Fürsorge und Respekt im Vordergrund stehen. Sie greifen dabei auf langjährige Indigene Praktiken zurück und experimentieren zugleich mit multispeziesbezogener Gerechtigkeit sowie mit Formen von mehr-als-menschliche Governance.
Time to Listen (26.–27. Juni 2026) geht der Frage nach, welche Rolle Klang in diesem Wandel spielen kann. Die Konferenz lädt dazu ein, die Idee des Zuhörens und des Musizierens auf mehr-als-menschliche Akteure auszuweiten: Tiere, Pflanzen, Flüsse, Ökosysteme und Technologien werden als klangliche Partner verstanden. In Vorträgen, Diskussionen und Performances erkunden wir Wege, das Hören und Musizieren vom Anthropozentrismus zu lösen und in eine ökologisch und klanglich vernetzte Welt zu überführen. Auf dem Spiel steht dabei nicht weniger als die Kreativität selbst: Wenn Beziehung – und nicht das autonome Individuum – zum Ort kreativen Handelns wird, welche neuen Formen geteilter Handlungsmacht, von Gegenseitigkeit und gemeinsamer Hervorbringung werden dann möglich? Und methodisch gefragt: Wie können künstlerische Praktiken, Zuhören und Aufmerken, Rituale, Emotionen, Geschichten, Humor und eine »produktive Eigenart« jene Irritationen erzeugen, die transformative Öffnungen erlauben?
Die Konferenz ist Teil des Projektes SPREEKLÄNGE, einem Festival zeitgenössischer Musik entlang des Flusses Spree in Charlottenburg der Akademie der Künste (25.-28.6.2026) und findet in den Räumen der Akademie am Hanseatenweg statt. Sie wird von field notes /inm und Akademie der Künste gemeinsam veranstaltet und entsteht in Zusammenarbeit mit der Komponistin und Wissenschaftlerin Liza Lim, die das musikbasierte mehrjährige Forschungsprojekt »Multispecies Creativity and Climate Communication« (2025–2029) an der Universität Sidney leitet.
